Taeyang released his first studio album in nine years, QUINTESSENCE, on May 18, his birthday, marking his 20th anniversary since debut. The album is his first full-length release since 2017's WHITE NIGHT and, as the title suggests, deeply captures his musical identity and authenticity. At a listening session on May 18 at Cube Convention Center in Mapo, Seoul, Taeyang said he focused on what is most himself while continuing to take on new challenges, maintaining the musical color built over two decades. The album features 10 tracks, including the title track LIVE FAST DIE SLOW, with Taeyang participating in all tracks to elevate the overall quality. The title track conveys his will to stay centered amid a rapidly changing reality and is the fastest-tempo song he has released to date. Collaborations with global producers stand out, including The Kid LAROI on OPEN UP, Paul Blanco on LOVE LIKE THIS and YES, and YES samples Big Bang and 2NE1s Lollipop for a special twist. Additionally, Tarzan and Woochan from Olde Day Project contribute as features on WOULD YOU, reviving the fresh vibe of his debut days. Taeyang explained that the release date coincided with his birthday because the plan was originally to release earlier in the year, but BigBangs Coachella stage preparations shifted the schedule, naturally landing in May. He decided to release on his birthday as a gift to fans. He added that defining essence with a single word is less important than the process and attitude of seeking it, sharing a musical reflection. Meanwhile, this solo activity opens BigBangs 20th anniversary project, and Taeyang revealed that he and the members will appear in various forms to meet fans, heightening expectations for full-group activities.
