ILLIT is building anticipation for its fifth mini album, ‘BREAK EVEN,’ with previews of its music and concept content. From the upbeat whistles of title track ‘I’ll Arrest You’ to B-sides spanning several genres, the album promises new sounds and emotional expression.
The group released a teaser video on the HYBE LABELS YouTube channel on October 5. Opening with the warning ‘Irritation arrives faster than you think,’ it connects the members’ shifting emotions during everyday mishaps with the album’s tracks. Unexpected situations highlight each song’s personality, offering a playful first look at the release.
Title track ‘I’ll Arrest You’ is an electropop song defined by bright whistles and lively energy. In the video, the members dance, blow whistles and run around while playfully tussling with an enforcement squad holding a ‘TOO LOUD’ sign. The witty staging complements the rhythm, catching both the eye and the ear.
The B-sides broaden the album’s appeal with contrasting moods. ‘Super in Love’ is an indie dance track blending gentle beats with a dreamy feel. Minju wanders around her room during an excited phone call, only to discover afterward that a heart-shaped telephone cord has left the room in chaos.
The baile funk track ‘Pop’ features a fresh melody, a groovy rhythm and a repeated ‘Pop Pop’ refrain. As the pancake tower Yunah and Wonhee painstakingly built collapses, hiccup-like sounds add an offbeat touch. ‘More,’ a speed garage track with dynamic rhythms and gritty sounds, makes an impression with its direct lyrics. Its accompanying scene follows Iroha playing blindfolded tag, then removing her blindfold after realizing the other members have disappeared.
The recently released ‘BURNING’ concept photos and film explore another emotional dimension. Sports Seoul interpreted the album as focusing on the agency to end a relationship when one’s efforts and feelings are not reciprocated. It also described the title track as a bold warning to someone whose habitual kindness has sent confusing signals.
The concept content features Minju with red hair, Yunah expressing her emotions in front of a ring, Iroha holding a decorated hammer, and Wonhee regaining her composure after crying. Frills, rhinestones and lace retain ILLIT’s distinctive playful flair amid the darker atmosphere.
Ahead of the release, ILLIT will meet fans at ‘ILLIT LIVE ‘PRESS START♥’ ENCORE in KOREA’ on October 17–18 at INSPIRE Arena in Incheon. ‘BREAK EVEN’ arrives on music platforms on October 26 at 6 p.m. KST.
