The world’s first sign-language idol, 빅오션, has taken the stage again with their third mini-album THE GREATEST BATTLE. Facing civic prejudice and limits, they recorded songs using AI voice technology and performed choreography with a vibrating wrist metronome, turning the comeback into a ‘record of battle’ rather than a simple return. Members Chanyeon, PJ, and Ji-Seok have woven a narrative of a ‘battle won as if by a miracle’ for this album, centering on the title tracks One Man Army and Cold Moon to declare a change in a powerful yet restrained mood. The collection spans eight tracks, including Alive and Back as well as instrumental versions. The album’s core message is to celebrate an attitude in which no one gives up. Chanyeon recalled facing prejudice before debut, saying, “I endured the belief that music was impossible because of my hearing impairment, but I didn’t give up the joy of expressing music with my body.” Ji-Seok emphasized teamwork, noting, “We practiced while adapting to different hearing environments, and learned to rehearse in front of a mirror by relying on each other.” PJ added, “The density of the stage with sign-language performances is stronger than before.” The album aims for a bold conceptual shift. The double title tracks One Man Army and Cold Moon are built with a twist that sets up both external battles and internal conflicts. One Man Army draws on Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Battle of Myeongnyang, conveying the will to overcome the moment of despair when twelve ships faced around 130 Japanese ships. The track features majestic strings, a weighty 808 bass, and traditional military instruments to heighten battlefield tension, with all members contributing to the composition. Cold Moon uses the Moon and Earth as metaphors for inner restraint and a mature self, a synth-pop track. In performance, the “One Man Army” stage employed twenty dancers in a large Crane Wing-like formation, plus a scene of ships setting sail toward the sea and choreography that uses sign language, all to visually realize the “battle narrative.” Chanyeon said, “We wanted to tell our story through the battles we achieved from zero.” Ji-Seok added, “We imagine our fandom as ‘Wave’ and will build victories together with fans.” PJ commented that the stage density with sign-language performance is stronger than before. Another major backdrop is the collaboration between technology and humanity. 빅오션 participated in ITU’s ‘AI for Good’ conference in Geneva, Switzerland last year, performing on stage and reinforcing the belief that technology should move in a direction that helps people. Chanyeon said, “Even with concerns about AI misuse, we hope AI is used to help humans.” PJ revealed that a hearing-impaired colleague also participated in the music-creation process, inspiring others. Their activities extend beyond domestic horizons. Alongside the album release, they announced a tour beginning April 10 in Chicago, visiting major U.S. cities, then New York, Minneapolis, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles, with plans for a European tour. 빅오션 said, “If today’s stage felt lacking, honestly tell us. But we will learn from it and show a more developed version.” Ahead of their second anniversary, the three members reaffirmed their resolve to communicate through music despite prejudice, and they expressed a wish to earn the new moniker ‘독기돌.’ Through sign-language-based performances and AI-assisted music production, 빅오션 continues to deliver music that supports a vigorous life to audiences around the world.
